Notes:

  1. Gallbladder of a leopard: The chinese phrase for gallbladder shares a character with the term for courage and leopards and bears were one of the most ferocious animals, so if you’ve consumed the gallbladder of a leopard you’re supposed to have suddenly gained a lot of courage.
  2. Lin little chicken: In this case, because what happened during the fight at the Wan Yan military camp, word got out through the mouths of the storytellers.  In the past, storytellers would change the real names of the people that they based their story on and this would help them escape punishment if their story was exaggerated/false or upset those in power. Lin little chicken was just a name they came up with for Lin Ji’er probably because  the character of “Ji” in Ji’er’s name is phonetically the same as the character for chicken.
  3. Heartbreak grass: or polonium: is a classic poison in Asia and Russia. If you consume it in small amounts, it’s effects can be felt very soon, if consumed too much, death through asphyxiation will occur.
