  1. A fight with the river behind you: It’s a chinese idiom which means the fight to get out of a dangerous and or desperate situation. The origin of this idiom was a phrase used in “The Records of the Grand Historian” to describe a battle during the 3 Kingdoms period between Liu Bei’s general Han Xin and the King of Zhao. The King of Zhao had brought 200,000 soldiers and trapped Han Xin’s 12, 000 men at the Jingxing pass. In order to defeat the King of Zhao, he ordered 10,000 men to lay a formation by the river to ambush the Zhao army and used the 2,000 cavalry to lure the Zhao army to his trap. Han Xin won the battle and the term a fight with the river behind you became an idiom to describe a fight when the odds were against you.
